Alice Dalgliesh was an American writer and book editor who created over 40 books for kids, mostly illustrated by Katherine Milhous.
alice Dalgliesh immigrated to America in 1912 where she studied at the Pratt Institute. She received her Master's degree from Teachers College, Columbia High school and taught at the Horace Mann Colledge, before composing her first book, A Happy Colledge Year, in 1924. Some of her Newbery Honor works include, The Silver Pencil, The Bears on Hemlock Mountain, and The Courage of Sarah Noble. In 1959 The Courage of Sara Noble won the Lewis Carroll Shelf Prize.
dalgliesh was the children's book editor at Scribner's from 1934 to 1960. She also developed science fiction works. She was Robert A. Heinlein's editor at Scribner's, and fought with him about his work, from Red Planet , ending with Starship Troopers. This was detailed in letters released in Grumbles from the Grave by Virginia Heinlein.
